HEALTHY EATING AT JAR'D IN SALAD HOUSE

As a hands-on-mom, one of the biggest concerns when it comes to budgeting is how to cut on food expenses but not sacrificing health benefits. I simply don't see any point in saving and choosing the "unhealthy" options, but later the money that I saved will just be spent on medications and hospitalization.

THE TRANSITION TO HEALTHY EATING

In our family, we are slowly (but surely) transitioning to healthy living. Yes, I must admit, it is not an easy task, but it is worth all the effort. How do we do it?

1.  I started growing our own food. In my little backyard, I started planting some veggies and herbs. It is such a happy feeling whenever my hubby (the family's chef) says, "punta ka nga sa garden, pitas ka ng basil".  We also have some arugula, tomatoes and kalamansi.

2.  We try to cut on junk food and soft drinks.

3.  We stopped drinking instant coffee and now enjoy brewed coffee. We source our coffee beans from local suppliers and help the local farmers in our small little way.

4.  We try very hard to cut our intake of pork.

MY LOVE AFFAIR WITH THE "GREENS"

Ever since I started growing veggies and herbs, I got complete access to organic greens. Basil and arugula are my top favorites.

Sometimes, for merienda, I will harvest some arugula and make my own salad -- fruit in season, chicken chunks and honey-apple cider vinegar dressing. Or just cook pasta with my home made pesto sauce. When I get too lazy -- I just wash the arugula and dip it in humus for a quick fix  :)

JAR'D IN SALAD HOUSE

But I cannot grow my greens in very hot weather. I had zero harvest last april and may. How sad. At times like this, when I crave for something healthy - I just buy my supply in the grocery.

But my latest discovery made healthy eating very easy. There is a new neighborhood Salad House that concocts the most delicious salad dishes -- Jar'd In Salad House.

What makes it unique?

1.  You can visit them at Congressional Avenue and order the salad of your choice. Or you can choose to take out the salad and share it with your entire family. They put the salad in this transparent jar.  If you chill the jar right away, the salad can last up to two days.

GREEK
(roasted chicken walnuts, arugula, leettuce, bell peppers, tomatoes,
watermelon, feta cheese)

2.  The ingredients are guaranteed fresh. The lettuce, they get all the way from Baguio.

3.  I have heard of people saying, "boring and salad. Lasang dahon."  Which is NOT true. Jar'd In Salad House makes interesting salad dishes really worth trying. When I visited them, I tried the Cancun BBQ Burrito Bowl - with romain lettuce, protein rich roasted chicken breast tossed in BBQ sauce. I loved the flavors of the black beans, corn and garbanzo beans. The basil pesto yogurt sealed the yummy taste.
